Burn Pits
Soldiers call it the Iraqi Crud, a lingering illness that many of them get and that some are linking to large pits where waste is burned. Balad, Iraq was home to a 10-acre pit where the American military burned more than one hundred tons of chemical and medical waste each day. Many of the soldiers who lived and worked near the pit developed chronic, sometimes fatal, lung illnesses. Dick Gordon talks with Captain Le Roy Torres about living and working under the plume of the burn pit, and how he copes with his illness. Captain Torres is joined by his wife, Rosie Torres, who has started a registry of the people who have fallen ill and suspect it is because of their exposure to these pits.
