AFRICAN LEADERSHIP

Last week, Mo Ibrahim, a Sudanese-born billionaire, announced a new prize:  five million dollars will go to an African president who demonstrates commitment to democracy and good governance. And who has left office peacefully.

Benjamin Mkapa

Benjamin Mkapa was the president of the east African nation of Tanzania for ten years.

These days, in addition to attending international forums on globalization, the former president is clearing ground on a cashew nut farm in his home village.

He still remembers fondly his time working as the press secretary for Julius Nyerere, Tanzania's beloved founding president, and the lessons he learned from Nyerere about good leadership.
