LASTING EFFECTS OF 9/11

Steve Mormino CroppedSteve Mormino  <<larger

It’s been nine years this weekend since two passenger jets were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center towers. Those attacks changed this country profoundly, and they continue to have a direct and dramatic effect on the people who worked on site in the aftermath. When Brooklyn firefighter Steve Mormino arrived in lower Manhattan just after midnight on 9/11, he expected devastation. But what struck him most was the silence. For the next four months, Steve worked constantly at Ground Zero. Years later he found out that his lungs had been permanently damaged from the particles in the air. Today, Steve talks with Dick about his forced retirement (he’s in his forties), and the unexpected silver lining that came with it.

NEXT CHAPTER: Larry and Ellen Johnson

We first met Larry and Ellen Johnson back in June, two months after the BP blow-out. Larry and Ellen run a small family business on the Mississippi gulf coast. Larry fishes for shrimp and crab and oysters and Ellen cooks and packs the food for sale. That was their business until the spill in the Gulf. Today, we check in with the couple to see how things are going.

Tomorrow, Muslims across the world will celebrate the end of Ramadan, the holy month of the Islamic faith when followers abstain from food, drink and sex from sunrise to sunset each day. Krista Bremer does not participate in Ramadan, but the traditions influence her no less - through her husband. American-born-and-bred Krista fell in love with her Libyan-born husband over food. She shares how his commitment to his faith has frustrated her, challenged her and taught her.
