MODERN DAY SLAVERY

For many of us, slavery seems like something from the Civil War era. But for millions of people around the world, slavery is a fact of life. In fact, it is their life. The use of forced, unpaid, exploited labor is widely practiced not only in developing countries, but also in the so-called First World.

It's estimated that there are now 27 million slaves worldwide, more than at any other time in human history.

Dick talks with Jean-Robert Cadet, who spent his entire boyhood and much of his adolescence as a slave in Haiti. There he was known as a rest avec, French for stay with.

She would ask me to come to her bedroom and I would be kneeling at the foot of the bed and scratching the bottom of her feet. She would tell me to do it until she fell asleep. You know, as a child you find that boring you fall asleep. And when I fell asleep, she would kick me in my face.
