The Secret of Scent

Luca Turin

Luca Turin moved to Nice, France when he was a young man. He was entranced by the region's beauty, and by the strange, dusty bottles of perfume he found at local flea markets. It was one perfume - the evocatively-named Nombre Noir - that initiated Luca into what would become his career. He spent the next 15 years studying the secret of smell.

Luca talks with Dick about why we are attracted to scents, and what goes into a beautiful perfume.

Learn more about Luca's book, The Secret of Scent

Music heard in this story:
I Love Your Smell by Marilyn Rucker for the album Teapot Lady

Add to story

OFFICE WITH A VIEW

Amy Androff and her brother, Jason

Amy Androff wrote to us to say that the stories we've covered about Iraq made her think differently about her own brother.

First off, I listen to The Story every day at work. I work in a building without windows or fresh air...your program has become a window to the world for me. But there is one other window in my office. I have pictures hung up from my brother who is stationed in Iraq. I suppose I haven't written sooner because I am afraid you wouldn't be as captivated by the story of my brother as I am.

1st Lt. Jason Androff

However, before skipping over this submission, please think about it again. This isn't just a story about a solider in Iraq, its about my family and how the quietest one [my brother] has shaped our relationships and inspired a young writer.
-Amy Androff

See some of Jason's photos from Iraq

Add to story

LISTENER FOLLOW UP - IRVING

We received a lot of mail concerning our story of Irving, an illegal immigrant who won a full college scholarship to Marquette University.

Sandy from Milwaukee said:

I am extremely happy that Marquette University has answered the call to the struggle of these students. I applaud them for their bold efforts in what can only be a benefit for our community here in Milwaukee, but also our country. I hope that other Jesuit and non-Jesuit universities follow suit.

Steve Frieder, Marquette University

Scott from Greensboro, NC disagreed:

What do you have to say to the millions of deserving LEGAL residents who were passed over to award Irving the scholarship? I wish Irving no ill. However, no matter how we label illegal aliens, it doesn't alter the fact that they're here illegally and consuming scarce resources to the detriment of legal residents.

Steve Frieder, from the President's office at Marquette University, joins Dick to answer Scott's question.

Hear the original show

Add to story
