Consumerism as Art
Brian Ulrich, image courtesy of Daoud Bey
As the country is trying to claw its way out of recession, photographer Brian Ulrich has been exploring facets of our consumer culture. He stood by a trash can for two months in Chicago to see what people were throwing away. He used the same approach inside a big box store to document the clientele and the products.
Lately Brian has been spending his nights at an empty mall capturing foxes and coyotes on film as they invade former department stores. Brian talks with Janet Babin about his art, our consumption, and the honor of winning a Guggenheim Fellowship.

A First On the Football Field
Marlin Briscoe
This week, we're listening back to the special series we aired following the election of Barack Obama as the first African American President of the United States.
Marlin Briscoe was a star quarterback in high school and college. But in the 1960s, no black quarterback was leading a team in the NFL. Marlin got his chance when he was drafted as a defensive player by the Denver Broncos. He played one season as quarterback before he was pulled from the position and never played quarterback again.
Marlin talks with Dick Gordon about his own successes and failures, and what Obama's win last night means to him. This story originally aired on November 5, 2008.
- See The Magician, an upcoming movie based on the story of Marlin Briscoe
