Mike's first deployment as a combat artist was to Afghanistan, where he says he was struck by the colors and the light. "All Eyes Down" is one of the first paintings that came from that experience.

This watercolor sketch comes from a deployment to Iraq. Lately, Mike has found himself getting interested in nocturnes, or night scenes.

Mike snapped a photo of a young Marine, Lance Cpl Nick Ciccone at the Kandahar International Airport. He was struck by the look on his face, and later made a drawing of the image. Years later, Mike got an email from the young man's family saying he had committed suicide.
