[PHOTOS] The Legacy Of A Home For Leprosy Patients


At its peak, the National Leprosarium in Louisiana housed more than 450 leprosy patients. And as scientists discovered how difficult it is to transmit Hansen's disease, as leprosy had become known, they allowed patients to leave. But few did. These are historical photos of the what is now known as the National Hansen's Disease Museum.

Dr. Dave Ores operates a cash-only health clinic on the lower east side of Manhattan. One of his programs is called "Fresh Start" and he offers free removal of hand, face and neck tattoos to those who need it. Dr. Dave is tattooed himself.
