Sauerkraut Runner
Bob Goodale
When he was thirteen years old, Bob Goodale had an interesting
summer job. Bob wrote, "I was a sauerkraut runner. In Iowa during 'sauerkraut season,' young men in hip boots
trudged around in huge vats. My job was to get in the vats when the brine
was below their knees and 'run' around until the brine was well over
their knees!"

Toe-Checker
Mel Miskimen
Mel Miskiemn took a summer job as a “toe checker” at the local pool after graduating from high school. Mel tells Dick that she used this low-paying job to take revenge on middle school snobs by enforcing the rules and making them wear unattractive bathing caps. And she paid her way through college.

Horse Carriage Driver
Lucy Carnaghi
Lucy Carnaghi drove a horse-drawn carriage through the
streets of Chicago. Lucy loved horses and she loved her job, but she
confesses that till this day, she has never told her parents that it
involved her driving her carriage alone, loaded with cash, at odd hours
of the night.

CARING FOR MRS. BLACKBURN
Margaret Sudekum
When Margaret Sudekum was 16, she took a summer job caring for a woman with quadriplegia named Mrs. Blackburn. Margaret says she learned a few lessons, including the idea that circumstances don't necessarily dictate how you must live your life.

and hotel they knew, the two girls saw an ad in the newspaper for "tour
guides." Eileen ended up selling questionable time shares.
