One of the most pressing health issues of our time is the dramatic rise of diabetes in this country. David Damiano has Type One or juvenile diabetes - he was diagnosed when he was just 11 months old.
At the time, his parents Ed Damiano and Toby Milgrome had little idea of how to care for their son, despite the fact that Toby is a pediatrician. The only instructions they found were for children much older, and didn't apply to him. When David's blood sugar was low, for example, he was way too little to eat a sandwich.
The two parents have ended up helping their son in exceptional ways. Ed, a biomedical engineer, is working to simplify diabetes care through his research - including current clinical trials with an artificial pancreas. Ed and Toby talk about their lives with David, and their hopes for other families struggling with diabetes.
