Joanne Dobbs' American mother and German father moved the family to Germany in 1937. Thinking they'd found a good escape from the Great Depression, they went into the hotel business with family.
Then the war began. Joanne's father was drafted into the German Army and barely survived. When he returned home, Joanne had to reconcile the myth she had built in her mind with the reality of the man her father had become. Years later, Joanne translated her parents' wartime letters and gained a better understanding of her father.
