Defending A Friendship

When Maria Essig was 10 years old, her best friend was a priest named Father George. The two spent a great deal of time together--playing tennis, going for bike rides, talking philosophy. Maria and Father George started their friendship decades before the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic Church, but their close bond still raised eyebrows and drew judgment from neighbors. Maria explains why she and a man 30 years her senior became such close friends and how she recognizes that this kind of relationship would never be able to happen today.
