FLEEING THE DRUG WAR
The vicious drug war in Mexico seems to be reaching across the border into the U.S. Recently three people with ties to the U.S. Consulate in Cuidad Juarez were gunned down in broad daylight after leaving a birthday party, and the FBI is investigating. Carlos Spector is an immigration attorney in El Paso, just over the border from Juarez. He represents Mexicans seeking asylum in the U.S. Many of them are police officers, journalists, lawyers, and business owners - all refugees from the drug war. Last year Carlos became a target himself, receiving a threat from armed gunmen. Carlos talks to Dick Gordon about the consequences of his work with drug war refugees – self imposed exile from Mexico, and the fear of gunmen around every corner.
HOPE IN REALITY TV
Jessica McCloud had a bad year. She lost her job as manager of a Pilates studio. Then she was hit by a car while on her bicycle. During her months of rehab, Jessica, a graduate of theater school, started thinking about her life and developed a "try anything" attitude. When someone suggested she try out for a reality TV show about cooking - one of her favorite hobbies - Jessica went for it, using her skills as an actor to create a killer audition packet. Best of all, the audition was set to take place on her birthday. It seemed like all the stars were finally aligned for something positive to happen. Or not.
