THE MUSIC OF THE MAESTRO

In the past two weeks, Valery Gergiev conducted the opera “Boris Godunov” at the Met in New York. Then he took his musicians, the Mariinsky Orchestra, to Detroit, Chicago and Chapel Hill. This week he’s doing five concerts at Carnegie Hall. Oh, and in the midst of all that, he performed at the Kennedy Center. Dick Gordon met the maestro in his dressing room, backstage at The University of North Carolina’s Memorial Hall, for an intimate conversation.

PERSONAL POLITICS – ALONZETTA AND ALONZO

The midterm elections are bearing down on us – and the airwaves are full of stories of the critical races around the country…and race remains an issue. Alonzetta Huey's dad Alonzo voted in any and all elections. As an African-American Alonzo lived through harassments and threats on many a voting day. Alonzetta never quite "got" her dad's commitment to the political process until he told her one story from his own past.
