Crossing the Saar - Twice

Lieutenant Carl Baumgaertner fought in the Second World War along the Saar River in Germany. Like many veterans, he tucked his war memories in a footlocker and never spoke of them. Fifty years later, a series of email exchanges with his son Jim sparked a detailed conversation. Carl’s grandson John has a part in the story as well. He had a chance to go with his dad to the spot in Germany where his grandfather fought so many years before.

This year is the 60th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. Brian Iglesias has a film that honors service in that conflict. It’s called “Chosin." Brian is a vet himself. He served in Iraq. Brian says that having a chance to listen to vets from the Korean War tell their stories has made his own homecoming a bit easier.
