Big Oil in Your Backyard

BIG OIL IN YOUR BACKYARD

Port Arthur, Texas is a town ringed by petrochemical plants and refineries. Hilton Kelley lives there, and for the past ten years he has made it his business to be a kind of watchdog. He takes pictures of the flares and smoke plumes, samples the air, and talks to his neighbors. Eventually, Hilton found a way to get the refineries and the petrochemical plants to work with the people of Port Arthur. And today he collects a major environmental award for his efforts - a 2011 Goldman Prize.

SOUNDTRACK TO A DREAM COME TRUE

We’ve asked listeners to call the Open Mic line with stories of dreams coming true. Elizabeth Borowsky called to tell about how she helped Dick Smith realize a lifelong dream. Dick is 95 and lives in a retirement community. He’s had a piece of music in his head since the 1930s. Elizabeth, a professional pianist, helped him hear his music for the first time.
