A Private Astronaut

Fifty years ago this week, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man into space. Richard Garriott can also claim a first of sorts. He was booked to be the first paying passenger on a Russian space flight. In 2008, he spent 12 days in space, and ever since that time he’s been plotting to go back. He’s now part of a team that’s designing a new form of sky-diving. People will ride a rocket into space, and then jump out, for the long fall back to earth.

Before anyone actually left the bonds of the earth’s atmosphere, we had to imagine what it was like. One writer who did so in great detail was Ray Bradbury, in The Martian Chronicles.
