The General's Ear

When Sarah Chayes quit her job as a reporter, she started up a soap-making co-op in Kandahar, a gesture of faith in Afghanistan's future. Now, she has lived and worked there for the better part of ten years, even serving as an advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other top military leaders. She says the ultimate problem in Afghanistan is not terrorism - it's corruption.
