Months before Gilad Shalit, a kidnapped Israeli soldier, was freed, negotiations were at a dead end. Shalit’s release in exchange for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners was arranged through back channels by Gershon Baskin, an American-Israeli activist committed to the coexistence of Arabs and Jews.
