After Solitary

Brian Nelson, convicted of armed robbery and murder, spent 12 straight years in solitary confinement at a supermax prison in Illinois. He is out now, but at times still feels the repercussions of the time in what he calls the "gray box." The Tamms, Ill., prison has come under scrutiny after inmates have alleged that their basic human rights are violated by the extreme isolation of solitary confinement.
