'I Spent The Last Decade At War With The Guantanamo Guards'

Produced by

A former inmate at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Ft. Leavenworth, Kan., wrote a letter to The Story’s host Dick Gordon in response to the show’s recent coverage of detainees at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp.

He says the experiences a Guantanamo detainee described on the show were familiar to him because U.S. Army guards from Guantanamo Bay also work at Ft. Leavenworth. The Pentagon confirmed to The Story that guards are transferred between the two facilities.

"Dear Mr. Gordon," the letter begins. "I’m writing in reference to your story about the Gitmo hunger strike. The army guards currently staffing the detention facility at Guantanamo see themselves as being at war with the people they’re guarding. I know this because I spent much of the last decade at war with those same guards myself."
