Opening A Window: Getting Started As Labor Activists

In May this year, laid off workers from the now-bankrupt Republic Windows and Doors in Chicago opened their own factory, New Era Windows Cooperative.

In this excerpt of the documentary “Si Se Puede,” we look back at the events that led the workers to “fire the boss” and open their own factory. Producers Dan Collison and Elizabeth Meister spoke with workers and organizers at Republic Windows and Doors about their decision to hold a lock-in in their company in 2008.
