Distracted Driver Ends A Life, Shatters Her Own

Produced by

Kate McGuire’s life changed on April 7, 2011. The high school student was driving back from a clarinet lesson when she decided that she wanted something to eat.  She glanced away from the road to her GPS unit to look for the closest McDonald’s when she veered off the road, not seeing a parked pickup truck and a man standing beside it. When she crashed, she killed a father named Howard Stein. McGuire was charged with vehicular homicide by negligence, and as part of her sentence, she was required to give seven talks a year about the dangers of distracted driving. But she tells producer Phoebe Judge that no matter how many students she reaches, she will never be able to make amends for what she did that day.
